The PHACS Approach

Moving and Handling Training, Managing Challenging Behaviour, Mental Capicity ACT, E-PHACS, Personalisation, The PHACS Approach UK

Person-centred Handling and Assessment in Challenging Situations is an approach which is designed to complement traditional Moving and Handling Training courses. When handling people in Health and Social care, we are required to use guidance set out by Health and Safety Legislation.

PHACS is an approach which recognises that moving and handling practice does not occur in isolation: it has to be seen from the perspective of the person and how that person wishes to live his or her life.

The PHACS Approach encourages the practitioner, carer and trainer to use both Health and Safety Legislation in the Moving and Handling Risk Assessment process, but to also take into consideration Person-centred Legislation and Guidance such as, The Human Rights  Act, The Mental Capacity Act and Dignity in Care Guidance, which encourages us to consider physical, psychological and social factors when Moving and Handling people.

The PHACS Approach includes Moving and Handling Training courses and Moving and Handling Risk Assessment Documentation which has been designed to be used with people who are often considered to display 'challenging behaviour', or people who become unpredictable in handling situation. This model is particularly suited to people with learning disabilities, who lack mental capacity, are diagnosed with dementia, or those with communications difficulties.

When the Moving and Handling situation is less than ideal, practitioners, trainers or carers will need to develop Moving and Handling Risk Assessment skills which are more Person–centred.  The use of safe Moving and Handing skills may also have to used with  effective ‘Management of Challenging Behaviour’.  The PHACS Approach offers a number of options.

P-PHACS is a 5-Day People Handling Moving and Handling Trainer’s Course which includes a City and Guilds Certificate. It encourages the trainer to deliver more Person-Centred Moving and Handling  training courses, which encourages the learner to consider the perspective of the person to be moved and handled.
