Traditional approaches to Moving and Handing are often based on the assumption that the situation is relatively straightforward and the person to be handled will express no objection to the handling task or the equipment to be used.
The PHACS Approach considers the carer, but also enables the person to be handled (or their advocate) to have their views and wishes included in the assessment, as part of a Balanced Decision Making process.
The PHACS Decision Support Tool assists the practitioner in prioritising decisions when considering possible safer handling solutions. The relationship between the person to be handled, the handler, the equipment and of course the environment, contribute to create a task which may be considered to be challenging for the handler and the person to be handled. The inclusion of the person to be handled in the choice of equipment or approach to be used, has to be a fundamental consideration. However, balancing the rights of the person against the risk of injury to the handler can be a challenge in itself.
The one day course was designed for Health and Social Care professionals who are involved in moving and handling of people in community settings, or educational providers who wish to widen their knowledge of the diversity of moving and handling theory.
